Travertine

Travertine is a beautiful, porous natural stone, a type of sedimentary limestone formed from calcium carbonate deposits in mineral springs, especially hot springs. Known for its warm colors (like cream and tan), distinctive fibrous or concentric patterns, and textured, pitted appearance from trapped gas bubbles, it is a durable and versatile building material used for centuries in architecture and for interior/exterior design elements such as flooring, wall cladding, and countertops.

Travertine's story is one of geological formation and human ingenuity, beginning with mineral-rich water depositing calcium carbonate in springs, forming porous limestone.

The Etruscans first used the stone around the 8th century BCE, but it was the Romans who truly popularized travertine, quarried near Rome, and built enduring structures like the Colosseum. Revered for its durability, aesthetic appeal, and easy transport, travertine became a symbol of classicism and is still used today.
